Trucking for extended durations can become quite lonely, which is why many truck owners bring along a co-pilot — just not of the human variety. A trucking “pet” can make the experience of driving long hours much more enjoyable. Here are a few tips when it comes to trucking with an animal companion.
Stock up on food and water
This might seem like obvious advice, but it’s especially important when you have a traveling companion that you are also responsible for. It may be hard to find quality pet food while you’re on the road, so making sure you’re well prepared for a journey is wise. Try to purchase multiple bags of higher-end pet food without any fillers, that way your pet stays healthy, happy and comfortable at home and on the road.
Keep pets safe and comfortable
You wouldn’t drive without a seatbelt or let your child ride unsecured, would you? The same goes for your pet. If you slam on the breaks your pet could get seriously injured if they aren’t properly cared for. Fortunately, there are a number of options for keeping pets safely restrained while traveling. A harness that attaches to a seatbelt, for example, will allow your pet some freedom while also keeping them safe. You will also need to make sure you have a soft, warm place for your pet to sleep, and you should never leave your pet in your vehicle while you’re away for extended periods of time.
Let pets out frequently
No one wants to be cooped up in a truck for hours at a time. If you’re going to have an animal companion, you should be comfortable with taking frequent rest stops so they can stretch their legs. Animals need time to play, exercise, and use the bathroom too. Even if you have a cat, a few toys or a scratching board is a good investment to keep them entertained.
Don’t forget the vet
Trucking comes with its share of hazards. Consider purchasing pet insurance if you’re going to be traveling with a truck pet, it could save them in an accident. Regardless, you should take your pet to get examined by a vet at least once a year. You will also want to make sure your traveling companion has all the necessary medication and vaccinations needed to survive in different climates and regions.
