April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and we’d like to take this time to share a few of the national campaigns to spread awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. Truck drivers are on the road constantly, and picking up the phone one time while driving can lead to horrible consequences. Take the time this month to spread awareness with truckers and drivers everywhere about the extreme dangers of distracted driving.
History Of Distracted Driving Awareness Month
The National Safety Council (NSC) has observed National Distracted Driving Awareness month every April since 2009 and aims to draw attention to the epidemic. The NSC and many other organizations launch safety campaigns and urge drivers to spread awareness to as many people as possible during the month.
Calls Kill Campaign
One campaign launched by the NSC called “Calls Kill” spreads awareness on the risks of cell phones, including hands-free phones. Many drivers have switched to hands-free devices to talk on the phone while driving, as they believe cell phones are only unsafe when their hands are off the wheel. Hands-free devices are not risk-free, and the distraction of talking on the phone is enough to cause an accident even when your hands remain on the wheel. Take the pledge to let not use your cell phone while driving, and always pull over if you must take a call while on the road.
U Drive. U Text. U Pay.
Another popular driving safety campaign is called “U Drive. U Text. U Pay,” launched by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This campaign is supported by television, radio, digital advertising, and social media with ads featuring video of teens texting while driving and the horrible accidents that happen. The videos are difficult to watch, but are very effective for showing the real dangers of texting while driving, and aim to make teens think twice before picking up their phone behind the wheel.
