The holiday season can be a difficult time for many truck drivers and owner-operators. A life of truck driving often means long hauls that can keep you away from home for weeks or months at a time, even during the holiday season. While there’s little that can be done to change the nature of the business, there are a few things truck drivers can do to make the most of the holiday season. Here are a few tips.
-
Don’t overextend yourself. While the holiday season tends to be a good opportunity to take on some extra work and pad the bank account heading into the new year, don’t overextend yourself to the point of exhaustion. The most important thing of all is to keep your safety, and, if need be, relax a bit.
-
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. While most of us in the trucking industry are highly self reliant and individualistic, the holiday season always comes with an extra layer of stress and anxiety. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with emotions and thoughts during this time, don’t be afraid to ask for someone to sit and talk with you over a cup of coffee. It’s the least anyone can do during the holiday season.
-
Keep in touch. These days the internet makes it incredibly easy to keep in touch with loved ones. If you can’t be there in person, don’t forget to make video calls to friends and family so that you can still enjoy some holiday cheer together. Using the internet to order gifts online is also a great idea for those with busy schedules.
-
Stay positive. It’s easy for negativity to breed during this time, especially if you’re alone. Try to focus on the positives of this year and next instead. Hell, don’t be afraid to indulge yourself. There’s nothing wrong with buying oneself an end of year present.
-
Rest up! When it comes to dealing with holiday stress, sometimes it just comes down to maintaining healthy eating habits, exercise and sleep.
