Donald Trump is America’s President-elect, and he has promised to make America’s infrastructure great again. How he’ll put his vision into action, however, remains unsettled. Most involved in the trucking industry are hopeful that he will deliver on his campaign pledge due to his extensive experience in construction.
In a statement, ATA President and CEO Chris Spear said, “During the campaign, he [Trump] highlighted the need to create jobs, and recognized that improving our nation’s infrastructure is critical to strengthening the economy […] We look forward to working with President-elect Trump on a host of issues, including long-term sustainable infrastructure funding, tax reform and fair and free trade.”
Trump and Trucking
Executive director for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Bud Wright believes that initial rhetoric from Trump indicates a future in which the freight industry gets a much needed boon infrastructure. There are no details regarding specific plans yet, but the general attitude is a degree of optimism. Investors hope that the President-elect will spend more on the nation’s roads and bridges. It’s also worth noting that infrastructure spending is not part of the “first 100 day” strategic plan that Trump has laid out for his administration.
The Trump administration could roll back some of the Obama-era regulations, such as the second round of greenhouse gas limits for trucks. Free trade could be at risk with a Trump presidency, as Trump campaigned on a promise to undo the North American Free Trade Agreement. Many fleets carry overland trade with Mexico and Canada, and truck makers have assembly plants south of the border.
Every President has their own budgets and plans, but it all still comes down to what Congress wants, and Trump the candidate was often at odds with Republican leadership in Congress. Still, Trump is likely to face less partisan resistance than President Obama, as Republicans now hold majorities in both the House and Senate.
