Fog presents a serious driving challenge as foggy conditions reduce visibility and make the road increasingly dangerous. As a professional truck driver, it’s important to practice safe driving habits. Here are a few tips for staying safe on the road during foggy weather.
-
Slow down – This is the obvious one. If you cannot completely see where you’re going, it’s time to put on the brakes and drive at a reduced speed. Keep in mind that thick fog will mask the sensation of speed by removing normal visual indicators, so it’s a good idea to use your speedomoter as a guide instead.
-
Turn on low-beam headlights – Many driver’s first instinct is to turn on high-beam headlights when visibility has been restricted by foggy weather. However, when you’re driving through fog high-beam illumination just further impairs visibility by reflecting light off the fog and back at your vehicle.
-
Use fog lights – Some vehicles have fog lights that are specifically designed to help illuminate the road and make your vehicle more visible during foggy conditions. Consult your manual if you are unsure how to activate your vehicle’s fog lights.
-
Stay near the right-side pavement lines – In thick fog, the white lines painted on the side of the road are your best visual guide for what’s ahead. Center pavement markings will put you closer to oncoming vehicles, so staying near the right-side will help you avoid other people who are also having trouble seeing where they are going.
-
Don’t stop in them middle of the road – Another natural reaction is to stop when you can’t see where you are going. This is dangerous, especially on a foggy road. Instead, find a safe place to pull over that is as far away from traffic as possible. Turn off your lights so that motorists do not mistake your taillights for the lane of travel and cause a collision.
