Fuel is one of the most significant expenses for truck drivers or fleet managers, as the cost can add up whether they are stuck in truck or driving along the highway. In fact, improving your fuel efficiency by just 1 MPG can save you thousands per year! Continue reading for a few tips on how truckers can improve their fuel efficiency.
Maintain Speed
Every time you accelerate, you burn more fuel, so it’s crucial for truckers to maintain a steady speed as much as possible. Increasing just 1 MPH results in a .14 MPG decrease in fuel economy, so every time you brake then speed up, it uses a lot of fuel. Be aware of your speed and avoid unnecessary stops, but remain safe and always travel as the posted speed limit or below.
Avoid Unnecessary Driving
Truckers must be as practical as possible while on the road and avoid any unnecessary stops or routes. While it’s a good idea to find the lowest cost gas station, there is a chance that it won’t be on your route. If you are going out of your way for cheaper gas, you should also use the stop as a bathroom break and purchase any food or drinks you need to avoid stopping again for a few hours. However, trucking-specific GPS systems can be very helpful for finding affordable gas stations along your route to avoid any detours.
Keep The Truck Light
Heavy items can take a toll on your fuel efficiency, as the more weight that is in your truck, the more work it has to put in to move along the highway. You will likely be carrying an extremely heavy load- don’t make it any heavier than it needs to be with unnecessary items.
Tire Pressure
If your tires aren’t properly inflated, your truck may be using more fuel than it needs to. Underinflated tires decrease fuel economy; for every 1 PSI drop in pressure, your fuel mileage can be reduced by .3%.
Mindful Braking
You can’t avoid braking while driving, especially when in traffic, but there are ways to reduce braking as much as possible. Leave a good amount of distance between you and the vehicle in front of you to avoid braking and improve your fuel efficiency.
