Cartage vs. Drayage in Trucking

Semi-Truck on the Open Road

Cartage or drayage? What’s the difference?

The world of truck shipping is more complex than the average outsider might know. Sure, you see different kinds of trucks on the highways, but there are all kinds of truck shipping formats. There is full truckload and less-than-truckload shipping, for example. You might also run into cartage vs. drayage in trucking, which we are about to discuss now.

What Is Cartage?

Cartage is the transportation of goods from a port to a facility, in which the goods will be separated and sent to different destinations within the local area. Cartage is a form of short distance transportation from a shipping port to another stopping point in between the port and the final destination. What makes it unique is that it contains multiple goods that have different destinations.

What Is Drayage?

Drayage is the transportation of goods from a port to a facility, where another vehicle will take it to yet another shipping station or its final destination. Drayage is the same as cartage, except that the whole load stays together and has one destination. This mode of truck shipping is best for full truckloads. It is slightly safer than cartage, as it involves less handling, and also costs less for the same reason. However, if you do not have a full truckload to ship, it is better to use less-than-truckload shipping.
