The United States’ economy is making a comeback and bringing the trucking industry with it. As the economy of America as whole along with local economies improve, they naturally rely more heavily on a variety of trucking companies for importing and exporting goods.
In 2014 the trucking industry generated a record-breaking $700.4 billion in revenue. Prior to 2014 the U.S. trucking industry’s revenue had never exceeded $700 billion.
Although you may not realize just how significant the trucking industry is in America, it is an ever-present piece of our economy and society. With the help of many a trucking company, the United States is able to have the invaluable ability to connect every town and city across the country with one another. This, in turn, tangles different local economies together to create one united American economy.
Because of the United States’ extensive highway system, the trucking industry flourishes as the fastest and most economically friendly way to deliver essential goods across the country. Trucks are not only used to move shipments solely by road; they are essential for cities in America that may not be close to a port for the exporting and importing of goods to other countries.
According to the American Trucking Association, 68.8 percent of all domestic freight was transported by trucks in 2014, which is equal to about 10 billion tons of goods.
Why did the trucking industry see such a revenue jump?
One obvious cause of the revenue increase in trucking companies nationwide is the steady improvement of the U.S. economy, increasing the need for trucking transportation across the country. Another reason for the growth of the trucking industry is the astonishingly low gas prices the United States has seen recently. With the combination of increased freight volume due to an improving economy and lower fuel prices, it was a perfect storm for the growth of the trucking industry.
What does this mean for the future of the trucking industry?
Currently in many local trucking companies there’s actually a shortage of drivers, due to the growth of the industry as of lately. This is pushing wages even higher for truck drivers in order to attract more interest. This wage increase is not only good for current truck drivers, but could attract more people to an area where job creation is already underway thus benefitting more people who may previously been out of work.
As the economy improves, the trucking industry grows, and as the trucking industry continues to see increased revenue, there will be more job creation and higher wages thus improving the economy even more. It is a mutually beneficial relationship and promises long-term economic improvement for America as a whole.
