Sitting in front of the wheel of a tractor trailer for many hours can cramp up muscles, cause weight gain, and irritate joints. As truckers, getting the job done often means suffering through these conditions on a daily basis. Fortunately, there are a number of exercises for truckers that can be practiced inside and outside the cabin of your vehicle to improve flexibility and to stay healthy on the road. Let’s take a look at a few.
Inside the Cabin
When spending at least 11 hours a day on the road, it is easy to put your health on the back burner. Not prioritizing your health can have lasting negative effects on the body, so it is important to focus on staying energized. Here’s a list of useful exercises for truckers on the job.
-
Hand Stretching-Using fine motor skills all day to steer the wheel of a large vehicle can cause stiffness in the fingers and wrists. One useful exercise for truckers is stretching the ligaments in the hands. This reduces risks for arthritis, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
-
Abdominal Crunching– To keep core strength high, physically flexing the abdominal muscles for a set duration is an extremely useful exercise for truckers. Flex your abs for the entirety of your favorite song, news report, or for the duration of each red light you hit and you will stay fit.
-
Planks-Planking is a useful exercise for truckers while taking a break from the road. Hold your body in a straight line upon a flat surface for 30 seconds. Repeat.
-
Shoulder Shrugs– To keep strain off the neck, this exercise for truckers keeps neck and shoulder muscles relaxed and limber.
Outside the Cabin
While stopped at a rest station, renting a motel for the night, or grabbing a bite to eat there are a number of outdoor exercises for truckers that will keep you in peak performance shape.
-
Bear Crawls-Crawl while holding the body off the ground. Keep knees high and hips low.
-
High Knee Runs– They’re pretty self-explanatory. Run back and forth while lifting your knees as high as they can go.
-
The Mountain Climber-Start in a push-up position and bring your left leg to your right elbow. Now put it back. Take your right leg and bring it to your left elbow. Now put it back. Repeat.
-
The Crab Walk– Bring your hips up towards the sky while rooting your hands and feet to the ground. Walk your hands and feet sideways for a distance, then return. Repeat this motion.
