We want you to live. We really, really want you to live. To that end, we are getting out the word that April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and, as we do throughout the other 11 months, we want to help you ensure your focus is on safety. With new technology being released at breakneck speed over the last several years, it can seem harder than ever to concentrate. Unfortunately, distracted driving is causing thousands and thousands of deaths through car accidents each year. Here’s what you need to know to help spread awareness.
The National Safety Council
Every April, The National Safety Council (NSC) observes the month as Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The goal of the council is to help draw attention to this epidemic. The slogan of “Take Back Your Drive,” is meant to empower drivers and put safety first. The NSC asks that you help get the word out by sharing tips on social media, websites, and email.
Distracted Driving Awareness: Avoid Changing the Radio While Driving
There are a lot of seemingly simple tips on avoiding distracted driving that most vehicle owners tend to forget. The first tip has to do with your radio. Instead of fooling around with trying to find CDs or changing music while you’re driving, set up your music selection before you start driving. You always should have your eyes on the road to stay safe, and even glancing at the radio knob for just a second could have devastating consequences.
Distracted Driving Awareness: Don’t Use Your Cell Phone While Driving
While there are many laws in place to discourage cell phone use while driving, the authorities obviously can’t crack down on every single person who is talking or texting while driving. Hands-free devices may seem like a reasonable option, but even those contribute to distracted driving. You know how easy it is to get caught up in a conversation, and hands-free devices can’t prevent that from happening. While we’re used to having our phones on us all the time, it’s important to remember that driving deserves our full focus.
Distracted Driving Awareness: Pull Over
If you absolutely have to take a call or talk on your phone, just pull over! We understand that emergencies happen or that you are expecting an important call, but that doesn’t provide you with an excuse to become a distracted driver. Simply pull over in a safe location.
