As temperatures drop, it becomes more difficult for truck drivers to navigate through the weather. There are many problems that truck drivers have to handle when temperatures get low enough. Poor visibility is a concern, and tire traction isn’t nearly as strong, among other issues.
Fortunately, you can apply certain safety measures to make sure you keep yourself as safe as possible when on the road. Here are some tips we have for truck drivers to help them safely drive through winter weather.
Conduct Inspections on Your Vehicle
To get your truck as prepared as possible for the winter weather, you want to be proactive. This means preparing your truck ahead of time so that it’s ready for the brutal weather conditions. Look at your engine oil and tire pressure, as well as the antifreeze levels you have before you start driving. It can also be a big help if you get a professional to inspect your truck.
Don’t Drive Too Quickly
Many accidents will happen due to truck drivers not slowing down while they drive. Snow can make roads slippery, meaning there is less traction. This means you’ll have to compensate for the poor traction by driving more slowly than you may normally drive. You’ll also have more time available if you need to react to anything that takes place while you’re driving.
Make Sure You Have Extra Space
This goes hand-in-hand with driving more slowly. If you allow yourself more space between your truck and the one driving in front of you, it will be easier to react to any situation that arises. Trust us when we say that you will need the extra space. Wet roads alone will double the stopping distance you need, but snowy roads will require ten times the distance! On top of making it easier to react to situations that pop up while you’re driving, it’s also generally safer to be a safe distance from some drivers just in case they’re not the safest drivers around. If drivers are unpredictable and reckless, you want to give yourself enough distance to keep yourself safe from them at all times.
